Tooth Extraction- Post Operative Instructions

A certain amount of swelling, stiffness, oozing of blood and discomfort is expected after having a tooth extracted. Please follow the post operative instructions below.

Bleeding:

Some oozing is normal the first 24-48 hours after the surgery. Apply pressure to the extraction site by biting firmly on gauze for about 45 minutes. This should help control the bleeding. Replace the gauze as needed to reduce the bleeding. Please do not spit, smoke or drink from a straw for 2-3 days following your surgery.

Pain Relief:

You may take over the counter Tylenol® or Advil® every 4-6 hours. If you are prescribed another regimen, please follow the directions on the bottle. Please take antibiotics as prescribed, until they are all gone. If an allergic reaction occurs, please discontinue use and contact our office immediately.

Swelling:

Icing 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off for the first 24 hours can reduce possible swelling. A warm compress can be used 24 hours after surgery to sooth the area.

Oral Hygiene:

You may begin brushing on the day following your surgery. Be sure to stay away from the extraction site with your toothbrush. You may follow brushing with warm salt water rinses (1/2 teaspoon salt to 6 oz. warm water).

Diet:

A soft diet is recommended the first 2-3 days after the surgery (e.g. mashed potatoes, soups, pastas). You may return to your normal diet as soon as it’s tolerable.

Activities:

Please avoid vigorous activities for the first 2-3 days after surgery. This includes any heavy lifting. You should be back to your normal routine about a week after your surgery.
